Shown here is a beginning voice class, held in the Jewish Chapel on CMC's West Facility. These men had completed guitar classes taught by Ms. Lutz, but wanted to continue learning from her—so she created this voice class. There is such a strong level of trust, mutual support, and risk-taking in this class that even my presence with a camera did not impact the students' all-in attitude. By the end of the class, every student had sung a vocal solo for the class—some a capella, some with guitar accompaniment.
The instructor is Joelyn Lutz; she is sponsored by the William James Association, as part of the Arts in Corrections program. Funding for these photographs was provided by the California Arts Council.
