The art students on C-yard at CSP-Sacramento requested photography instruction, so Annie Buckley and Ginny Oshiro of the Prison Arts Collective asked me to make a presentation there. In the past I have only made photos of other folks teaching, so this was new for me. We did not have access to cameras or computers that the men could use, so I took in a projector and we viewed and discussed images I have made over the years of prison art classes around California. Afterward, I gave a portrait lighting demonstration with the men serving as subjects. I was able to project the images onto the wall of the gym as we were working, so the men could see the different lighting effects.
The class is part of Arts in Corrections (www.artsincorrections.org), which is funded by California's Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and administered by the California Arts Council.
Prints of these images are available at cost to families of the artists; 100% of the modest charge goes to FOTOMOTO to cover printing, handling, and shipping. To order prints, mouse hover over any thumbnail, then click on the shopping basket at top right of the thumbnail image.
